This new age of technology that we live in today has brought with it many positive effects on our day-to-day lives. It has made performing tasks more efficient and effective.
To name a few, people can now read newspapers online, shop online and use a GPS to get directions from A to B. With the help of computers and the internet people no longer have to wait for TV shows to be broadcast on TV, as they can simply go on to the internet and download the latest episodes whenever they please. However it’s not only these day-to-day tasks that have seen improvement thanks to the developing technology, but also the field of communication has had some significant advances.
The area of communication has seen some of the biggest changes and made huge progress over the years. Not too long ago the only way to stay in touch with people long distance was through the writing of letters, which could take weeks to be delivered and longer to be returned. As stated in a blog post on cooltechcrunch, “the invention of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell in the year 1875 was the first technological invention that impacted communication in humans to a massive extent.” Since then there have been a number of other advances in the field of communication such as Internet and mobile phones that have been aimed at improving the level of interaction between people. The introduction of social networks have given people a quick and convenient means of staying connected with people that they know or have meet who are long distance. Mobile phones also allow people to make long-distance phone calls. By having computers also allow people to speak on applications like Skype, which allow for a face-to-face conversation with people living far away. I know for a fact that tools like Skype and Facebook are some the greatest invention as it allowed me to stay in contact with my sister when she was in America for a year, participating in a Student exchange program. With the help of Facebook and Skype it felt like she never left and made the time go a lot faster than if we have little to no means of communication for that year.
With the progress made in communication over the years through technology, distance is just a number and talking to people can be done at the click of a button.
